Design considerations for volume control in audio amplifiers
Power supply voltage: signal swing
The typical swing of DAC (digital to analog converter) output is about VPP
The swing of the broadcast signal can easily reach 2 VPP or even higher.
When choosing analog volume control for digital control, it is crucial to have a certain understanding of the amplitude of the signal (which will be attenuated).
For controlling DAC output, ± V devices will be fully capable - the upper limit provided is 10 VPP, as the maximum value of the signal will not exceed VPP
Maintain dynamic range
In many applications, multiplying the digital value of a DAC by a coefficient less than 1 is an acceptable volume control method, which can use fewer bits to represent the signal without increasing the noise level.
Combining fewer bits to represent a signal with a fixed noise level will greatly reduce the dynamic range of volume changes.
By digital control and changing the volume in the analog domain, the inherent noise of the DAC will be suppressed along with the audio signal.
