» gallium nitride (GAN) is a high-performance compound semiconductor. Gan is a III-V direct band gap compound semiconductor, just like gallium arsenide (GaAs). Compound semiconductors provide an excellent combination of speed and power solutions in many microwave and radio frequency (RF) applications.
» Gan offers unique advantages for RF applications. Gan‘s unique material properties provide RF systems with advantages such as high power added efficiency (PAE), high power output, small size, wide bandwidth, thermal advantages and ruggedness.
» Gan is used in many commercial, defense and aviation systems. Gan‘s unique advantages support many new and existing applications, including radar, satellite communications, commercial wireless networks and cable television.
» Gan is critical to 5g. In order to meet the requirements of 5g log gigabit network speed and ultra-low delay performance, equipment manufacturers began to deploy high-power Gan in large-scale multiple input / multiple output (MIMO) systems.
» Gan can be used for the entire RF front end. Gan was originally used to make power amplifiers (PAS), but now it is used in low noise amplifiers (LNAs), high power switches and mixers.
» a variety of Gan processes and packaging options support different applications. GaN semiconductor manufacturers have developed a variety of process and packaging options to make it easier for system designers to find discrete components, single-chip microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) or modules suitable for their specific applications.
» Gan is extremely reliable, even in harsh environments. The mean time between failures (MTTF) of Gan at 200 ℃ exceeds 10million hours; MTTF is more than 1million hours at 225 ℃, which is more reliable than other semiconductor technologies.
» Gan can be used in mass production applications. The US Department of Defense (DoD) classifies Gan as the process with the highest level of manufacturing maturity (MRL) (i.e. MRL 10), which means that full speed production and lean production practices are in place.
» Gan is exploring new markets. Due to its unique performance, Gan began to expand to many new fields, including automobiles, medical systems and advanced scientific applications.
» Gan technology will continue to evolve. Future innovations in Gan technology and packaging will support higher frequency, higher voltage and even wider bandwidth, thus further promoting the popularity of GaN.
